English Language Programs

  • For applicants whose first language is not English, proof of English proficiency must be provided prior to admission. Applicants can submit scores from one of the following tests: IELTS, TOEFL, CAEL, or PTE Academic. To view our English proficiency web page, click here.

    Note: If you are studying the British Columbia curriculum at a Maple Leaf International School in China you must have four grade 12 academic courses including English 12 which meet our minimum admissions average. For English Proficiency requirements to be waived you must achieve a minimum mark of 60% in your English 12 class and pass your provincial exam.

    If English language and academic requirements are met, the student will receive direct admission and this form does not have to be completed. If the score is slightly below the ESL requirement, the student may be considered for one of the following two programs.

    Quick Start Program
    July 14, 2017 - August 25, 2017
    Cost: $6,750 (Includes tuition, books, residence, and food)
    Registration and Payment Deadline: June 1, 2017

    The Quick Start Program is intended for students who are slightly below the minimum ESL requirements to be admitted directly to King's for degree studies in September. In partnership with CultureWorks ESL, King's will conditionally admit students to study in this intensive ESL program if they present a minimum required proficiency scores.

    Program Requirements:
    1. Must be academically eligible
    2. One of the following test results must be met
      • IELTS - Minimum Overall Score must be 6.0, with no section less than 5.5.
      • TOEFL - Minimum Overall Score of 65 with no section less than 12
      • CAEL - Minimum 50 in all sections
      • PTE Academic - Minimum Overall Score of 54, with no section less than 54.
      • BC Maple Leaf - Less than 60% final grade in English 12.

  • KEY Program (King's Enhanced Year)
    September 7, 2017 - April 30, 2018
    Cost: $24,000 (Includes tuition, bus pass, activity fees, UHIP, and International Bridging program. (Cost does not include residence). *Please note that the Bridging program begins on August 30th, 2017 and has mandatory attendance--If living in King's residence, you may move into residence on August 28th, 2017 to be prepared for the Bridging Program to begin.
    Registration and Payment Deadline: July 1, 2017

    In partnership with Western English Language Center, the KEY Program is an eight-month program designed for students who are close to meeting the language proficiency requirements for direct entry to King's University College. By joining the KEY Program, students will strengthen their English, develop fluency and gain confidence while studying in two university-level degree credits to gain a head start on the completion of their degree at King's.

    Program Requirements:
    1. Must be academically eligible
    2. One of the following test results must be met
      • IELTS - Minimum Overall Score and Writing section must be 5.5, all other sections minimum 5.0.
      • TOEFL - Minimum Overall Score of 62, Reading and Listening not below 12, Speaking and Writing not below 16.
      • CAEL - Minimum 50 in all sections
      • PTE Academic - Minimum Overall Score of 46, with no section less than 46.
      • BC Maple Leaf - English 12 grade with less than 60% final grade.

  • I acknowledge that my overall score is 6.0 or above, my Writing score is 6.0 or above, and the rest of the sections are 5.5 or above.

  • I acknowledge that my overall score is 73 or above, my Reading and Listening scores are not below 14, Speaking and Writing scores are not below 19.

  • I acknowledge that my overall score is 55 or above.

  • I acknowledge that my overall score is 54 or above, with no score less than 54.

  • I acknowledge that my English 12 final grade will be greater than 50% and I will have a passing grade in my provincial exam.

  • I acknowledge that my overall score is 5.5 or above, my Writing score is 5.5 or above, and the rest of the sections are 5.0 or above.

  • I acknowledge that my overall score is 62 or above, my Reading and Listening scores are not below 12, Speaking and Writing scores are not below 16.

  • I acknowledge that my overall score is 50 or above.

  • I acknowledge that my overall score is 46 or above, with no score less than 46.

  • I acknowledge that I must provide proof of English proficiency in order for admission consideration.
